This fictional story takes place in a small town in Oregon. Recently, rich vacationers have been moving there in hopes of finding a rural getaway. With the rich people come country clubs, massively increased sweater prices and, worst of all, lawn care companies. Beauty obsessed Mary Swansburg, a new resident, gets sprayed with pesticides soon after moving into her new multimillion dollar house. Later that day two teenagers, Amanda and Winston, stumble upon her horribly disfigured body hiding in the woods. Where did she come from, they ask themselves. Does she want to eat us? All Mary Swansburg really wants, however, is to feel beautiful again.
