Abstract
This project includes the first twelve chapters of the generational novel, The Symphony of Arches, followed by a chapter outline and draft samples of selected chapters. Despite a summer that The New York Times deemed "the lost summer," Peter, the book's narrator and a recent college graduate, returns home to an alcoholic mother; truant younger sister; and the everlasting reminders and effects of his parents' divorce and older sister's death in the World Trade Center on 9/11. Peter takes up an "on-hold" relationship with Eve Gates, who is also home from college. Set in the affluent Westport, Connecticut, the two, young lovers struggle with and against their domestic issues and the values of their generation all way to Florence and back again.
