Abstract

A new species of Podostemaceae, Podostemum irgangii, from the states of Santa Catarina and Parana, Brazil, is described and illustrated. Features that distinguish the new species are the uniformly verticillate leaves and two forms of stipules. Adjacent to either side of the leaf base, adnate to the stem, occur two lobed or unlobed, stiffened ear-shaped stipules that are 0.7-1.1 mm wide and project 0.4-0.6 mm from the stem. Three to nine finger-like upright stipules, 0.3-0.5 mm long, occur on the adaxial side of the petiole base.
